Medicare Coverage for Heel Pain Treatment: What's Included

The most common cause of heel pain — sharp first-step pain in the morning — is fully covered by Medicare: examination, X-rays to rule out other causes, and a stepwise treatment plan from stretching and strapping to injections.

Bone spurs on the heel are diagnosed with covered in-office X-rays. Most respond to the same conservative care as plantar fasciitis; surgical removal is covered in the rare persistent case.

Pain at the back of the heel from Achilles tendinitis or insertional tendinopathy is a covered condition, treated with activity modification, heel lifts, and targeted therapy.

Anti-inflammatory injections for stubborn heel pain are covered by Medicare and performed in-office, often providing relief within days.

In-office X-rays and, when needed, referral for ultrasound or MRI are covered to distinguish plantar fasciitis from stress fractures, nerve entrapment, or arthritis.

For heel pain that resists conservative care, Medicare covers escalation — advanced injections, immobilization, and surgical release when medically necessary.

Covered follow-up addresses the mechanics behind your heel pain — calf tightness, foot structure, and footwear — so relief lasts.

How a Medicare Visit Works at Millennium Podiatry

Call or book online, and bring your Medicare card (or Medicare Advantage card) plus any supplemental insurance. Our front desk verifies your coverage before you are seen, so there are no billing surprises.

Dr. Levine examines your feet, reviews your history, and orders any covered diagnostics — such as in-office X-rays — needed for an accurate diagnosis of your heel pain and plantar fasciitis care needs.

Medicare covers care that is medically necessary, so we document your diagnosis and plan thoroughly. You will know exactly what is covered before treatment begins.

Many covered treatments are performed right in our Park Avenue office at your first or second visit.

Covered follow-up visits track your progress and keep small problems from becoming big ones.

Who Qualifies for Medicare-Covered Heel Pain Treatment?

You qualify for Medicare-covered heel pain treatment if you are enrolled in Part B (or Medicare Advantage) and have:

  • Morning heel pain — classic plantar fasciitis first-step pain.
  • Pain that limits walking or standing at work or daily life.
  • Heel pain after injury — possible stress fracture or tendon damage.
  • Pain persisting despite rest, ice, or shoe changes at home.

Heel pain is virtually always a medical (not cosmetic) diagnosis, so coverage is rarely an issue — we simply document it properly.

What Will Heel Pain Treatment Cost With Medicare?

With Original Medicare, Part B pays 80% of the approved amount for heel pain visits, X-rays, and injections after your annual deductible; Medigap plans typically cover the remaining 20%. A course of treatment usually spans two to four covered visits.

Medicare Advantage plans cover the same care with a per-visit specialist copay. We verify your plan before your first appointment.

Yes. In-office corticosteroid injections for plantar fasciitis and heel spur pain are covered at the standard 80/20 Part B split.

Generally no — custom orthotics are only covered in limited circumstances (such as shoe inserts within the diabetic therapeutic shoe benefit). We will tell you clearly if any device we recommend is self-pay.

Most heel pain improves substantially within two to four visits over six to twelve weeks. Each medically necessary visit is covered.

When documented conservative care has failed over several months, Medicare covers surgical options such as plantar fascia release. Few patients ever need it.

Not with Original Medicare. Some Medicare Advantage HMO plans require one — we will check your plan when you call.
