Medicare Coverage for Hammertoe Treatment: What's Included

A hammertoe that hurts, rubs in shoes, forms corns, or limits walking is a covered medical condition. Medicare pays for evaluation, X-rays, and treatment under Part B.

Flexible hammertoes often respond to covered conservative care: padding, splinting, corn management, and footwear changes that relieve pressure on the bent joint.

Corns on hammertoes are treated as part of covered deformity care — and for patients with diabetes or poor circulation, routine corn care itself is a covered benefit.

Rigid, painful hammertoes are corrected surgically — straightening the toe through a small incision. Medicare covers medically necessary correction, including pre-op workup and follow-up.

Related deformities — mallet toe (bent at the tip) and claw toe (bent at both joints) — are covered under the same medical-necessity rules.

When several toes are deformed (often alongside a bunion), Medicare covers correcting them together in one operative setting when medically necessary.

Most hammertoe corrections allow walking in a surgical shoe immediately. Covered follow-up visits track healing until you are back in regular shoes.

Call or book online, and bring your Medicare card (or Medicare Advantage card) plus any supplemental insurance. Our front desk verifies your coverage before you are seen, so there are no billing surprises.

Dr. Levine examines your feet, reviews your history, and orders any covered diagnostics — such as in-office X-rays — needed for an accurate diagnosis of your hammertoe and toe deformity care needs.

Medicare covers care that is medically necessary, so we document your diagnosis and plan thoroughly. You will know exactly what is covered before treatment begins.

Many covered treatments are performed right in our Park Avenue office at your first or second visit.

Covered follow-up visits track your progress and keep small problems from becoming big ones.

Who Qualifies for Medicare-Covered Hammertoe Treatment?

You qualify for Medicare-covered hammertoe treatment if you are enrolled in Part B (or Medicare Advantage) and your toe deformity causes:

  • Pain at the bent joint or the ball of the foot.
  • Corns or open sores from shoe friction.
  • Difficulty wearing normal shoes or walking comfortably.
  • Progressive stiffening — a flexible toe becoming rigid.

Straightening a painless toe purely for appearance is not covered, and we will always tell you which category your care falls into.

What Will Hammertoe Treatment Cost With Medicare?

With Original Medicare, Part B covers 80% of the approved amount for hammertoe evaluation, conservative care, and medically necessary surgery after your deductible; a Medigap plan typically covers the remaining 20%.

Medicare Advantage plans cover the same care with plan copays. We verify your exact costs before any procedure is scheduled.
