This condition most often develops as degenerative arthritis, which occurs when the cartilage in the joint gradually wears down over time. Early signs can include stiffness, swelling, and mild discomfort in the big toe, which may be easily overlooked at first.
This condition commonly affects people with abnormal foot anatomy, injuries, and a history of big toe overuse, such as athletes or those who spend long periods on their feet. Individuals who experience painful standing or repetitive stress on the joint may be more prone to developing arthritis.
Other contributing factors include damaged bones, certain medical conditions, signs of wear and tear, family history issues (medical), and other crucial aspects that can increase the risk. Over time, the combination of these factors can lead to limited mobility, making daily activities more difficult and impacting overall quality of life.
